Substance Abuse Policy Research Program

SYNOPSIS:
The sponsor provides support for policy studies relating to
alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. This round of funding will support
grants of under $100,000 and larger grants of between $100,000 and
$400,000.

OBJECTIVES:
The Substance Abuse Policy Research Program (SAPRP) is designed to
encourage experts in public health, law, political science, medicine,
sociology, criminal justice, economics, psychology and other
behavioral and policy sciences to address issues related to substance
use, one of the most pressing public health problems facing our
nation. Projects are expected to increase understanding of public and
private policy interventions to prevent, treat and reduce the harm
caused by the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. The primary
objective of SAPRP alcohol- and drug-related grants for this round of
funding will be to reduce the harmful effects of substance use
disorders and addictions by improving the quality of care for the
millions of Americans who need treatment. Tobacco-related grantmaking
will be limited to small grants of under $100,000 only. The majority
of SAPRP grants for this round of funding in tobacco will be in three
primary areas: (i) policies targeted at preventing or reducing tobacco
use and exposure; (ii) public or private policies and health care
system strategies that singly or collectively increase consumer demand
for and use of proven cessation products/services; and (iii) tracking
and evaluating the tobacco control policy gains achieved over the past
decade.
