Social and Economic Development Strategies for Native Americans

SYNOPSIS:
Support is provided for projects to promote the goal of social and
economic self-sufficiency for American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native
Hawaiians, and Native American Pacific Islanders through locally
developed social and economic development strategies (SEDS).  A total
of $10 million is expected to be available to fund approximately fifty
to seventy-five grants ranging from $25,000 to $500,000.

SYNOPSIS:
The sponsor make grants to qualified private non-profit
organizations to establish lending programs for household water wells.  For FY 2008, the HWWS grant funding available is $993,000. The non-profit organizations will use the grants to make loans to
individuals to construct or upgrade a household water well system for
an existing home. The organizations must contribute an amount equal to at least ten percent of the grant request to capitalize the loan fund.

Distance learning and telemedicine loans and grants are
specifically designed to provide access to education, training and
health care resources for people in rural America. The Distance
Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Program funds the use of advanced
telecommunications technologies to help communities meet those needs.  The grants, which are awarded through competitive process, may be used to fund telecommunications, computer networks and related advanced technologies.   The anticipated amount available to fund grant awards in FY 2008 is $24,763,815.

Partners for Fish and Wildlife is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Services habitat restoration cost-sharing program for private
landowners.  The program was established to offer technical and
financial assistance to landowners who wish to restore wildlife
habitat on their property.  The assistance provided by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service can range from giving informal advice on the
design and location of a potential restoration project, to designing a
project and funding up to fifty percent of the implementation cost
under a formal cooperative agreement with the landowner.

community-based organizations with experience in developing or
operating programs to benefit Alaska Natives; and consortia of
organizations and entities described in this paragraph to carry out
programs that meet the purposes of this program. A State educational

program only as part of a consortium involving an Alaska Native

applicants.

Legal Assistance for Victims Grants

SYNOPSIS:
The sponsor awards grants to law school legal clinics, legal aid or
legal services programs, domestic violence victims’ shelters, bar
associations, sexual assault programs, private nonprofit entities,
including faith-based and community-based organizations, and Indian
tribal governments. These grants are for providing direct legal
services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking
in matters arising from the abuse or violence and for providing
enhanced training for lawyers representing these victims. The goal of
the Program is to develop innovative, collaborative projects that
provide quality representation to victims of domestic violence, sexual
assault, and stalking.
