Reducing Health Disparities Among Minority and Underserved Children (R01)

Sponsor: National Institute of Nursing Research/NIH/DHHS

SYNOPSIS:

The sponsors provide support for research to reduce health disparities among minority and underserved children. Specifically, this initiative focuses on ethnic and racial minority children and underserved populations of children such as: children from low literacy, rural and low-income populations, geographically isolated children, hearing and visually impaired children, physically or mentally disabled children, children of migrant workers, children from immigrant and refugee families, and language minority children.  Specific targeted areas of research include biobehavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities such as biological (e.g., genetics, cellular, organ systems), lifestyle factors,  environmental (physical and family environments), social (e.g., peer influences), economic, institutional, and cultural and family influences; studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known illness and/or disability; and studies that test and evaluate the cost effectiveness of health promotion interventions conducted in nontraditional settings. This program will use the NIH Research Project (R01) award mechanism. <S2S>

Targeted Projects in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research

SYNOPSIS:

The sponsor wishes to stimulate and support research related to the derivation, standardization, characterization and optimization of new human embryonic stem cell lines. Specifically this Request for Applications (RFA) will only support efforts to derive and characterize new human embryonic stem cell lines to: devise novel and improved derivation methods; increase efficiency in the production of new cell lines; standardize protocols to improve comparisons between human embryonic stem cells (hESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells; and enhance their potential for clinical application.

Broadband Grant due on August 14

The deadline for the NTIA/USDA/Commerce broadband grant is rapidly approaching. The announcment was formalized on July 1 and the first date to submit is 31 July.

Submissions will be by electronic portal. This is odd given that the grant is to develop Internet access. Some appl;incatsd may not have direct Internet access.

Evolution of Infectious Diseases (R01)

Sponsor: National Institute of General Medical Sciences/NIH/DHHS

SYNOPSIS:

The sponsor provides support for research on the evolutionary principles that underlie the emergence, spread, and containment of infectious disease. An explicit goal is to stimulate interdisciplinary research between (a) quantitative and computational sciences and (b) experimental, clinical, or field studies. Areas of particular interest include the evolution of pathogens, evolutionary dynamics of host-pathogen systems, and the consequences of intervention strategies. The focus of this program is limited to discovery of fundamental biological principles rather than to detailed knowledge or treatment of specific diseases. This PA will use the NIH Research Project (R01) grant mechanism. <S2S>
