The goals of the Longleaf Pine Reforestation Fund are: reforestation of longleaf pine forests and restoration of these ecosystems; and sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Building on the momentum of the InvestMaryland initiative passed last session, Gov. Martin O’Malley unveiled a joint venture between the state, federal research labs and academic institutions to accelerate technology commercialization. Under the Maryland Innovation Initiative, participating universities would pay a fee of $250,000 each year and, when leveraged with state funds and private donations, a pool of money would be used to award grants to startup companies seeking to advance research from Maryland labs. The program would be administered by the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO). Legislation to establish the program was introduced as SB 239.

SYNOPSIS: The sponsor provides financial assistance to persons
and organizations proposing literacy projects and other educational
experiences that will introduce young people to Sherlock Holmes.

The National Science Foundation’s National Science Board has released the 2012 edition of its biennial compilation of U.S. science and engineering indicators and trends. This year’s release includes an interactive tool to view state S&E data and a separate digest with 30 key data points for evaluating U.S. progress. While the U.S. still leads the world in many of these key metrics, developing countries appear to have made significant strides in S&E competitiveness, according to the report.
