The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring the 12th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo featuring EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Program. More than 35 P3 university and college teams are gathering on April 16-17 at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C., to showcase their innovative designs and solutions to real-world environmental and public health challenges. This year’s teams are testing ideas such as repurposing chemical byproducts from the mining industry into new concrete that helps inhibit the corrosion of steel, and developing a food waste collection kiosk that will spur food waste to energy production in the local community.

These showcasing P3 teams are currently competing in the second phase of the annual P3 grant competition. In the first phase, selected P3 grantees received awards of up to $15,000 to fund the development of their projects and bring them to share at the National Sustainable Design Expo. Following the Expo, these inspirational P3 teams will then compete for Phase II awards of up to $75,000 to further develop their designs and potentially bring them to the marketplace.

Join us at the expo and view the exciting ideas and designs for sustainability from this year’s P3 team.
